ICANN is responsible forĀ managing the assignment of TLDs (see our article “How Does: Domain Typing Work” and devolve the assignment of Country TLDs to a body in that country. In the UK an organisation called Nominet is the internet registry for .uk domain names.
ICANN and Nominet devolve the responsibility of registering domains to authorised registrars, Nominet often refers to them as Tag Holders.
We are a Nominet Tag Holder ( our tag is SOUTHCOT) and register .uk domain directly with them. We register all other TLDs, including other country TLDs, with TUCOWS who are one of the largest ICANN registrars.
